CROS Gleaning is a produce recovery program that rescues fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. Volunteers help gather surplus produce from farms located in Hendry, Martin, and Palm Beach Counties; and the Solid Waste Authority’s mango grove in Lantana. Our main gleaning season runs from November through July, with smaller backyard gleans during the months of August and September. A portion of the recovered produce supports CROS Ministries’ food pantries and the Caring Kitchen program, while distribution partners help deliver the rest to local meal programs and pantries.
Gleaning – Biblical References
Gleaning as a practice to combat hunger is thousands of years old. The people most likely to be hunger victims
during the times of the Hebrew Scriptures were widows, orphans and people traveling through the land called
Sojourners. “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the
gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen.
Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:9-10) other references include
Deuteronomy 24:19-22 & Ruth 2:2ff.

Gleaning was a fun and rewarding experience! I teamed up with a girl from another school, and we quickly became friends. We laughed while gathering peppers, knowing our efforts would help those in need. Together, we collected 3,000 pounds of peppers, with my group contributing 12 buckets. CROS Gleaning is a great opportunity for schools to make a difference and connect with others. The best part was doing the work in God’s honor. I hope my school can participate again! - 7th grader from Trinity Delray
I participated in a CROS Ministries’ Gleaning event at a farm in Boynton Beach to earn school community service hours. My friends and I had a great time working together collecting fresh tomatoes, which were to be distributed to local pantries and meal programs. This has been one of my favorite service events so far, and I’m excited to sign up for more.
